“thank you”

I owe several posts (including our DC Trip) and plan to catch up while on vacation next week (tomorrow is my last day at Perkins). Here’s a fun post to tide everyone over.

This note came from Miss Mary on Alaire’s daily report card, sometimes the notes are pretty funny!

7/9/13: Before falling asleep – she went and sat on Julian’s bed w/ him as I was helping 2 other kids. I then asked her to go to her bed. She did. So, I said and signed “thank you.” She then said and signed “THANK YOU!” Very cute :-).

We captured this video that same evening:

Gray

My pre-baby naiveté assumed that once becoming a mother, my natural instincts would automatically kick-in and equip me wise-old-owl wisdom. I never feared that I might not know what to do with a baby in my arms that wasn’t there yesterday. Yet, one thing that surprises me most about motherhood is the constant internal debate between me, myself and I. From nutrition to clothing to sleepsacks, I obsessively question my decisions about Alaire’s care. Of course in most cases, the decisions are minor and matter little in the big scheme. For her, the day rolls the same whether she wears tennis shoes or Keene sandals to school. For me, I still wonder if she’s too hot in tennis shoes well into a 10AM meeting. Even for a proud Momma Bear, answers feel gray.

On a Friday in late June, daycare called with the alert that Alaire’s temperature was high. Teething is the current normal so our worry-meter remained low (and we spotted new teeth pushing through).  On Saturday her fever clung. She also cried when falling to her bum and gripped her fingers into my shoulders so I would not set her down. With U.G. & F.A. in town, my parents drove up for a visit. While changing her diaper with my mom, we noticed redness in her diaper region, but it seemed like a light rash. By Sunday, my poor sweet baby, normally running around grabbing every household item within reach (excluding her own toys), would only lay on her stomach across her Daddy’s lap. We did call the doctor and by description, diaper rash seemed the likely culprit. With instructions to bathe every few hours and use zinc oxide diaper cream, the afternoon progressed in confusion and worry. Finally, the gray became black and white very quickly. Alaire’s diaper area swelled throughout the evening and her cries emphasized her obvious pain. Graham went to Google. I called the doctor’s answering service again and while waiting for a response, called my boss’s wife, Sally, a retired pediatrics nurse. All evidence pointed to STAPH. Get to the ER.

We waited for over an hour before finally feeling the relief of hearing our names called. The nurse took one look at Alaire’s infection and said, “she’s going to need surgery guys.” The strangeness of her words and the alarm on Graham’s face will forever haunt my memories.  We never even remotely considered the possibility that Alaire needed surgery.  The next trauma unfolded as the nursing staff attempted to place IVs five different times, requiring three nurses, me holding Alaire down and Graham trying to distract her with books and Lilly. No dice, even for the IV big guns. With surgery “sometime” the next day, Alaire could not have food or water. Finally, at 4am the hospital admitted us to a room. We all slept from 5 to 7am, Graham and I squeezed onto the hospital pull-out.

Thankfully, they scheduled surgery for 11am, earlier than anticipated. Most alarming was how quickly the STAPH infection spread. By surgery hour, the redness and swelling moved up to her hip.  The anesthesiologist talked us through the process and risks, but assured us that all would be well soon. I could not help my stream of tears as I watched the doctors wheel Alaire away to surgery. How do you prepare for this moment?

The procedure was quick and they drained nearly a golf-ball size of fluid from her leg. They packed the area with a foot long string to channel the infection and maintain the opening for drainage. As momma, I got to go back to the post-op room which was filled with other children just out of surgery. Surreal in itself.  I rocked Alaire for nearly two hours as she breathed through a makeshift dixi cup oxygen mask (easier for the little ones I’m told). She softly cried “oooh oooh” over and over with concern in her big blue eyes.

Well, as you can see from the photos, Alaire had a speedy recovery! By Tuesday morning, we were more concerned about her pulling out the IV from tumbling around her bed and establishing bad habits by giving her sugary apple juice!

I will always remember her nurse, Christy, who took care of us all three days. She melted my heart while playing peek-a-boo and softly speaking sweet little encouragements to my daughter. I know it must have made Alaire feel safe.   I will also always remember the love and support from our family and friends.  Thank you Zach, Jessie, Larisa & Mel for the meals and morale support visits. And to our parents, it just feels good when you call over and over and over  to make sure we know you care. I’m sure Graham would agree, our appreciation for our parents grew a little more through this experience. I marvel considering how many times you all grappled with the gray while raising us…

Wattson’s Goodbye & Birthday Party

Everyone warned that upon starting daycare/school, our children’s friends’ parents would become our new social circle. Though we haven’t quite felt the full effects yet, meeting the Wozniaks made for some fun times. Graham enjoyed talking beer making with Jules. I enjoyed hashing over Alaire’s newest antics and talking work/life balance with Mel. We all loved clinking our glasses filled with rare beers (that only the Wozniaks could possibly find); full and happy on a Saturday afternoon.

Truly, Alaire & Watt’s made friends from the very first day of daycare, September 7th. At their newest daycare, two stories stick out: Watt’s teacher told Mel that Alaire was back in her crib crying and Watt’s tottled over and began banging on the sleeping room door in concern. And then one day, I dropped Alaire off and Watts was standing on the other side of large bench seat with a gate. He was fussing a bit. I stood Alaire opposite of Watts.  He grabbed both of her hands, held them, then she started to cry too. Standing there, both sobbing, holding hands – I fumbled for my camera but missed the moment.

We’ll miss our dear friends, but will definitely visit them in Telluride Co!

May 2013

Well, if you haven’t heard…my family has been quite busy the last 2 and a half months! Mom is WAY behind sharing my newest skills and adventures!  We’ll try to catch you up quickly so we can get to the juicy June stories.

First off, the kiddie pool felt mighty nice during the rare scorching hot spring days. ( BTW, You’re not allowed to laugh at me in my diaper when I’m 16)!

On Mother’s Day, I got to touch Aunt Jessie’s big belly and say hi to one of my new cousins.

I got to play in the balls with all of my friends!

Me and Kenzie shared some snacks (though I get in trouble when I try to sneak Kenzie my dinner…)

I got my very first phone from my friends, Alex & Emma. Watch out Mom & Dad!

I hung out in the back yard with Mom & Dad – they love me so much!

I went to my neighbors, Dan & Erinda’s house for their mini “pork-splosion.” Last year neighbor Dan baptized me in BBQ sauce so he thinks he’s my “Pork Father.”  I am not quite sure what that means; but it must be important since he got me this crazy onsie. Erinda picked out my purple bow, I like wearing bows!

AND! I got to visit my cousins in Bend.  I also got to meet my Great Aunt Karen & Uncle Allan. They are very special to my momma. Isn’t my cousin Colton brave? Someday, I will try to do tricks just like him. And, I want to wear sparkly sweaters just like my cousin Katelyn.

Cake Smooshing

Thank you to all who joined for our first cake smooshing! A day full of love! Portland offered the gift of beautiful weather allowing Watts & Alaire to play in the back yard with Alaire’s new elephant that shoots balls in the air. Alaire finally got to wear her purple party dress, a gift given from one of my dear friends and professional mentors, Susan Bladholm. The gift came with a disclaimer that Susan never buys impractical gifts, but after seeing the color I painted the baby room, this dress, hanging in a shop window, begged to be gifted to baby Vail.

Thank you to our incredibly generous and amazing parents for helping us with the party – from set-up to food. Thank you to Art & Rita for the many miles traveled. To Gramma & Hank for braving the big city, and to my mom and Don, no doubt Shutterfly’s best customers, for creating edition two of Alaire’s family book, capturing our most precious family memories. We so, so appreciate all of the love that surrounds our family.

Happy first Cake Smooshing to our baby girl (Graham insisted and Aunt “D” agreed – it had to be chocolate)!

Happy 1st Birthday

One of the best days ever. Graham and I took vacation to spend the day as a family and to spoil our girl on her first birthday. After a nice long nap we loaded up the gear and headed for the zoo (or as Graham, enjoying his cleverness likes to say, the stroller convention). A rarity in April, PDX gave us beautiful sunny day (just like the day she was born). The animals must have enjoyed the weather as well, because they put on a good show. After our zoo-outing, we headed to Portland Brewing for lunch and a birthday Sunday. We ended the day with some shopping! New outfits and toys. I learned that we are big suckers in a toy store and she can’t even beg for things yet. Oh well. I can’t believe how quickly this year has gone. The thought makes me stop every day to hold, snuggle and kiss Alaire. Thankfully, she still likes to snuggle-in for mommy and daddy love, even as she wiggles away for independence to discover that her legs can almost walk. Graham and I can’t help but look at one another and bask in our mutual pride of our baby girl, the best of both of us – and all her own.

New Tricks!

Lots of exciting tricks to share! Here’s what happens when you raise a dog before a baby…I think I even rewarded her with a cookie. Doh!
